Writing organisations and groups:
ARVON is a charity that has been supporting writers at every stage of their journey since 1968. They offer inspiring courses and retreats – both in-person and online – led by leading authors.
The UK Writing College is an organisation that runs three online training college courses for writers in the specific regions the UK, South Africa and New Zealand. They offer professional tutoring in creative and business writing, journalism etc as well as writing tips, competitions, newsletter, writer hire directory and editing services.
The National Association for Writers in Education(N.A.W.E.) sets its mission to enhance knowledge and understanding of creative writing as well as developing and supporting writers and good practice in teaching and facilitation in all settings. It's a charity that supports writers, writing facilitators and the sector as a whole, providing programmes, information and advice on professional development for writers and other literature professionals across the UK.

They specialise in short forms, including pamphlets and booklings and publish poetry, non-fiction and occasionally short fiction too.

The Story Prize is a compilation by writer Michael Shenton, of the most worthwhile (and genuine!) Current UK writing competitions Genres include short story, flash fiction, novel, poetry, children’s, etc. Most, but not all, are from the UK. All competitions on his site are carefully vetted. Many are open worldwide.
The Southport Writers' Circle began in 1971, when the illustrious Joan Nicholson started the group, with the purpose of encouraging writing in every form. It has annual Short Story and Poetry Competitions with monetary prizes and winners' readings at the Awards Night.
WRITORY is an international poetry contest which runs every month— so whenever someone finds your page, this one is open, with a deadline always within 25 days / 25th of every month (recurring — always open) Entry fee:US$5 per poem ($8 for two, $15 for five) Prize:US$12 cash + free entry to the next contest; participation certificate for all entrants. The monthly Writer’s Forum is a UK based quality magazine for writers of all genres (fiction, non-fiction, poetry) which runs frequent competitions.
The Next Generation Short Story Awards is a not-for-profit international awards program for authors of short stories.

Writing workshops:
Nurturing a new generation of writers for stage and screen in Kent, The Marlowe Writers’ Room is led by award-winning playwright and resident Marlowe Dramaturg Leo Butler. These bring together aspiring and emerging writers in the local area during weekly courses also offering with long-term access to helpful resources.
Literary & cultural festivals:
Every year, Canterbury Festival - hosts a myriad of cultural events including a Poet of the Year Competition, Springtime events and talks on history and culture, as well as Summer concerts.
