Risking All

SaveAs Writers' International Writing Competition 2024

Risking All

This year we were pleased to announce our annual writing competition on the theme of 'risking all' - in a tribute to the Everest climbing team who set off on an ambitious expedition aiming to reach the summit, 100 years ago. We invited you to send in your own creative piece of prose or poetry, inspired by the ideas below ... and the deadline was Saturday 31 August 2024.

A Word From our Sponsors and Judges:

Words from Tina Austin at Canterbury Festival, Sponsors of the 2024 SaveAs Prize for Fiction

Life is full of risks. From tiny ones we probably don’t even recognise as such, to great ones which change lives. Taking pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, is a risk; what will the final piece be like? Will it be diffcult to write? What influence might it have on others?

It may not be conquering Everest, but it might change something for someone, somewhere.

This is why Canterbury Festival is proud to sponsor this annual Prize for Fiction, recognising all those who take the risk to write and enter the competition, an act which may have consequences. So, we send many congratulations to all the risk takers who entered.

Tina Austin, November 2024

From Sonia Overall at Canterbury Christ Church University, Sponsors of the 2024 Save As Writers Poetry Prize

We have been delighted to support Save As Writers International competition again this year.

These awards celebrate new work at all stages, from the longlist to the prize-winners. Save As Writers champion creative writing regionally and internationally with these prizes. Throughout the year they work to bring creative opportunities to the community with workshops and readings. Everyone involved behind the scenes of this event is doing valuable work supporting and cheerleading new and established writers.

While the profile of Creative Writing at Canterbury Christ Church University continues to grow, with great successes in national research and teaching frameworks, we are keen to maintain our grassroots links with the region. Our tutors deliver workshops and writing activities in the community, and we have close ties with our local literary festivals. We are passionate about access to higher education. Our courses cover creative, professional and critical writing, from foundation level through to postgraduate study. We offer taught and research Masters places and supervise creative writing projects at PhD level.

Congratulations to all listed and wining writers this year, to the judges, Luigi Marchini and Save As Writers for another successful competition.
